King Charles III Has Been Diagnosed With Cancer

King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace announced today.

Although the King did not specify what type or stage, the news comes weeks after the British monarch underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the statement read.

The royal family also confirmed King Charles is currently undergoing regular medical treatment. While he will postpone public-facing duties, he will continue to work on state business and paperwork. “He remains wholly positive about the treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” Buckingham Palace said. “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

The monarch left Sandringham today to return to London, where he will immediately start treatment as an outpatient. The statement said, “His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”

The statement continued, “The king is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.”

Even though the palace will not be sharing any further details on the king’s diagnosis at this time, it is understood that the royal has not been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

King Charles underwent surgery in late January at a London hospital. At the time, the palace said in another statement, “His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.”
