How To Wear The Hair Band

Among the nostalgic wave of the 90s and the 2000s revival, the hair accessories are back in style: scrunchies, bandanas, and currently, the hair band. The minimal one, black and elastic and without frills, has come a long way from gym halls to the streets of New York. Today it becomes one of the favorite accessory of some of the most popular personalities in the world of entertainment, from Schiaparelli Haute Couture 2023 catwalk to the off-duty outfits of Bella Hadid. This fashionable use turns the hair band into a quick and easy fix for keeping your hair tidy all year round, both in summer and winter. The hair accessory, soft, in cotton, wool or crotchet and also colored if desired, is the perfect example of the quiet luxury phenomenon that is affecting fashion in this period: once the period of logomania has passed, it is not important to immediately know the brand that you wear, but just a touch, a recognizable?detail, and a strong connection with preppy and old money aesthetics are enough to elevate your look. Coming from the ’80s and ’90s, when Jane Fonda wore it for her workout videos, the hair band is an easy and versatile accessory to adopt against sweat and unruly newborn flyaways which recovers the balletcore trend in summer.

The 90s-inspired hair band has been been taken up multiple times by celebs and trendsetters, and today it’s reminiscent of the 90s, but its origins in use as we are familiar with today date back to the 50s, when after the war the hairstyles were less complex and responded to a more active lifestyle, as explained by Rachel Gibson, author and owner of the Instagram page The Hair Historian. According to the expert, the hair band reached its peak of popularity when Brigitte Bardot wore it in 1963 for Jean-Luc Godard’s film Contempt, where Bardot played a suspicious and passionate character, and the black band contributed to elevate the style that made her the blonde belle of French cinema of the time by giving a more intelligent and sophisticated twist to the character, switching the effect of her blonde hair in the entire look. A minimal but at the same time effective accessory that actually originates from the world of sport: in the 80s those who wore bangs were dedicated to body care and physical activity, a costume that indicated economic possibilities and wealth: here it is immediately those who wore bangs were identified as bourgeois, but cool, like Jane Fonda and the fitness divas of the time.

The return to the 80s aesthetics can also be seen in the beauty accessories that accompany fashion as it runs on the edge of quiet luxury, minimal but which as soon as it turns to night, turns into a colorful vision of abundance: the hair band was very popular at the Met Gala, and at the Schiaparelli fashion show all the models wore hair bands with gold accessories, and even Irina Shayk attracted attention with a garment and effective beauty look that focused attention on what the model was wearing.

Wearing a hair band to solve a bad hair day is one of the best solutions you can take advantage of, but to really raise the bar and elevate the style by wearing the coolest accessory of the moment, just use a few simple tricks. How many times have you thrown on a headband and noticed how the strands did not sit neatly on the nape of the neck? Here, brushes and impromptu products come into play to fix lengths and hair at the hairline so that they stay in place throughout the day. A brush with boar bristles is the perfect tool for combing hair backwards even without applying products, as the bristles work the sebum already present on the hair and distribute it with the brushing over the entire shaft without creating a dirty effect but nourishing and fixing the hair and hairstyle. Another idea, particularly for those who have a healthy or long fringe, is to use the gel and the brush to fix the fringe under the band so that it is not visible by dividing it in two. Alternatively, you can also use two hair clips, taking care to insert them under your hair so they don’t stick our of the band. Lastly, wear the hair band, take two side tufts of hair from above the headband and let them fall gently on the forehead.
