Voluminous 80s Hair Is Returning To Popularity

Following the 2024 Grammys it was clear to everyone: the 80s trends are officially back, especially beauty-related. When it comes to make-up and hair, the golden age of disco music evokes visions of classic icons, such as Madonna and Julia Roberts, but also of teased hair and metallic make-up. But if in recent weeks celebrities have shown off hairstyles inspired by that decade of excess and a large desire to live, it’s worth noting: 80s hair has returned.

Miley Cyrus completely threw herself into resurrecting 80s hair. At the Grammys earlier this month, she turned heads with a bouffant hairstyle – imagine slicked-back roots and defined curls swinging around her face. Her hairstylist, Bob Recine, used a lot of hairspray, Nexxus XXL Volume, to create her look. The goal? “We wanted to create something fuller… but sexy, wavy and still have a combable effect,” Recine said.

Another muse who recently showed off the 80s hair look was Florence Pugh. At the Dune: Part Two photocall in London last Wednesday, she showed off the modern side of 80s hair, with a look that perfectly mixed current and past eras. The actress has already shown off Marilyn Monroe-style hairstyles with parting and curls in the past, but this time she opted for an edgy mullet, complete with lifting of the roots, pointed ends and a pieced fringe.

And then there’s Blake Lively, who joined her bestie Taylor Swift in a VIP box at this year’s Super Bowl with disco curls. A modern take on a the brushed corkscrew curls that were so popular in the ’80s, Lively’s locks were a more wearable version of the trend.

Known for its volume and bouffant finish, 80s hair is very voluminous and can be achieved with lots of styling, which often involves teasing. At the time, hairspray was an necessity: many misted their locks into stiff shapes that look crunchy and stiff due to old-school product formulations. The perm – now largely dead and gone – was another popular part of the era, as were mullets and other unconventional haircuts of the time, which in the last two years have emerged to the mainstream public from the reference subcultures.
