The Sports That Inspire Current Fashion Trends

Sports have been taking over the fashion scene lately. Whether inspired by films or sporting events, fashion continues to borrow items from the sports wardrobe. Below, a look back at the sports that inspire fashion trends.

Tennis

The tenniscore trend, highlighted in part thanks to the upcoming release of the film Challengers in which Zendaya stars as a tennis player, continues to appear in the latest looks of personalities. The pleated skirt, an essential piece of the tennis aesthetic, was designed in the 1920s by the fashion designer Jean Patou and was worn by the tennis player Suzanne Lenglen. Today, the skirt is worn in daytime looks, and will undoubtedly be worn this summer in immaculate or darker tones, like Camille Charrière who wore the skirt in a navy blue tone paired with a zipped sweatshirt and dad shoes.

Ballet

Since the 1830s, ballet has seemed to influence fashion, driven in particular by the popularity of the first great Romantic ballerina, the Italian dancer and choreographer Marie Taglioni. Balletcore, which comes to life in the world of dance, is now being brought to fashion and the silhouettes take essentials from the dancer’s wardrobe, like the petticoat and ballet flats, once despised and now adored. Elsa Hosk adopted the trend in a feminine silhouette, consisting of a blue slip dress with lace, a white Bottega Veneta bag and pink ballerinas with satin ribbons.

Rugby

Revived by the Rugby World Cup, which was held in France from September 8 to October 28, and by the release of the film Saltburn in December 2023 in which Jacob Elordi wears striped polo shirts, the rugby polo shirt has established itself as a real trend to follow. Many big personalities have already taken on the trend. Marianne Theodorsen adopted the rugby polo shirt with yellow and black stripes, while Rihanna preferred it blue and red paired with jeans. Meanwhile, Hailey Bieber wore a rugby polo shirt with a white collar and a black mini-skirt.

Baseball

Popularized by baseball, the baseball hat was originally used as a visor on the fields. Now, it has become a real fashion accessory, allowing you to enhance any look. The baseball hat will be on everyone’s heads this summer. Gigi Hadid chose it in blue, complete with a striped shirt and denim shorts. Kendall Jenner opted for a monochrome blue look, paired with a sand New Era cap and carmine accessories.

Yoga

Disappeared after the 2010s and used only for the practice of yoga, leggings have returned and will establish themselves as the essential fashion of our summer. Pairing comfort and elegance, the yoga pants are capri and will be found in all outfits. Kendall Jenner showed off how to wear the once-controversial piece, with a grey ensemble matched with a pair of black ballet flats and a large bag.

Athleticism

Athletes’ outfits inspire our summer outfits. Light and comfortable, the shorts, typically reserved for sports, will be perfect for the hot summer weather (and to increase your fashion quotient). Camille Charrière wore short, blue sportswear shorts paired with a yellow shirt and Adidas Sambas.
