According to global market research firm Mintel, over 60% of women in countries within the European Union use or want to use skincare products with anti-wrinkle benefits. A trend also shown by social platforms: on TikTok, the “anti-wrinkle” hashtag has totaled over 280 million views. This search for skincare products with smoothing and firming properties has elevated some ingredients to the status of cosmetic stars. Retinol, for example, was the most searched ingredient on Google in 2022. Followed closely by hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and glycolic acid. But now a third and, so far, lesser known ingredient is beginning to get noticed and attract the interest of cosmetic laboratories for its considerable antioxidant properties. The ingredient? Ferulic acid, the protagonist of a growing number of latest generation of anti-wrinkle products.
Ferulic acid is present in multiple cereals (rice bran, oats, corn, rye, etc.) and vegetables (spinach). When infused into creams or serums (especially at a level between 1 and 3%), it fights cellular oxidation, a primary factor in skin aging. In other words, this ingredient protects the skin from pollution, stress and smoking, but also and above all from excessive exposure to the sun. Incorporated into the formulas, it acts on a plethora of levels.
- It smooths wrinkles
- Reshapes the oval of the face
- Regulates the production of melanin, to reduce the risk of the appearance of pigmentary spots
- Reduces possible inflammation, especially those caused by the sun
- Enhances the natural luminosity of the skin
In order for the antioxidant benefits of ferulic acid to be extra effective, it is advisable to opt for formulas that also include vitamin E or vitamin C. The reason is simple: these active ingredients have complementary properties. In fact, vitamin E promotes cell renewal and regeneration, while vitamin C stimulates the production of collagen.
