Maria Grazia Chiuri Leaves Dior

After nine years as creative director of the women’s haute couture, prèt-à-porter and accessories collections of the French luxury label, Maria Grazia Chiuri exits her role at Dior.

“Christian Dior Couture announces that Maria Grazia Chiuri has decided to leave her position as creative director of the women’s haute couture, prêt-à-porter and accessories collections,” the house said in a statement on Thursday.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to Maria Grazia Chiuri, who, since her arrival at Dior, has done an extraordinary job with an inspiring feminist perspective and exceptional creativity, all impregnated with the spirit of Monsieur Dior, which has allowed her to design highly desirable collections,” said Delphine Arnault, president and CEO of Christian Dior Couture. “She has written a key chapter in the history of Christian Dior, contributing greatly to his remarkable growth and being the first woman to lead the creation of women’s collections.”

“I would like to thank Monsieur Arnault for placing his trust in me and Delphine for her support,” Chiuri stated. “I am especially grateful for the work done by my teams and the ateliers. Her talent and experience have allowed me to make my vision of a committed female fashion a reality, in close dialogue with several generations of women artists. Together, we have written a chapter with a strong impact that I am immensely proud of.”

It has yet to be announced who will succeed her as creative director. The change comes after Dior appointed Jonathan Anderson as artistic director of the men’s collection in April, succeeding Kim Jones, who left the position in January.

The Italian designer began her career at Fendi in 1989 as a bag designer and moved to Valentino in 1999 as an accessory designer before being promoted to co-creative director with Pierpaolo Piccioli in 2008. She was appointed creative director of Dior in 2016, becoming the first woman in office since the foundation of the label in 1947 (before her were Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano and Raf Simons).

In her spare time, Chiuri has been dedicating himself to a personal project: the restoration of a historic theater, the Teatro della Cometa in Rome.
