Daisy Edgar-Jones To Star In ‘Sense And Sensibility’ Remake

Daisy Edgar-Jones is preparing for a Jane Austen summer. The actress has had a big start to the year, from attending Gucci shows to starring in the brand’s latest campaign and walking the carpet at Cannes. Now, it seems like it’s back to acting for Daisy Edgar-Jones, who has been confirmed as a lead role in an upcoming remake of Sense and Sensibility.

The novel, originally written in 1811 by English author Jane Austen, has been the subject of many adaptations over the years, including the 1995 film starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet, and a 2008 television series. The new film will see Edgar-Jones return to the big screen, following her previous leading roles in Twisters and Where The Crawdads Sing.

On June 25, the actress teased the news on her Instagram account, posting a photo of her holding a copy of the novel. While she didn’t confirm anything about the upcoming project, pieces of information have started to filter through elsewhere.

Deadline reported that Sense and Sensibility would be going ahead under the production of Focus Features and Working Title Films, who previously worked on the film adaptations of Austen’s other beloved works Emma (2020) and Pride & Prejudice (2005). The outlet also confirmed that Edgar-Jones would be playing the role of Elinor Dashwood, one of the two protagonist sisters in the story.

News of the film coincides with the 250th anniversary of Austen, and it seems an especially befitting celebration to bring her debut novel back to life on screen. It joins a roster of Austen-adjacent projects, including the upcoming Pride and Prejudice Netflix series starring Emma Corrin and Olivia Coleman, and the BBC Miss Austen, which was released previously this year.

The project has been scripted by author Diana Reid and has onboarded BAFTA-nominee Georgia Oakley as director. Currently, there’s no information on who will be starring opposite Edgar-Jones as her on-screen sister Marianne, or as the novel’s love interests Edward Ferrars and John Willoughby. Screen Daily has reported that production for the film is set to begin next month, so news following the rest of the cast should come any time now.
