Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are divorcing after two years of marriage. TMZ confirmed that Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in L.A. County Superior Court, citing April 26, 2024 as the date of separation.
The news comes following months of speculation over the couple’s marital status, with the pair reportedly living under separate roofs and spending much of the summer apart from one another. Jennifer Lopez recently spent time with friends and family – including Affleck’s 18-year-old daughter, Violet – in the Hamptons, where she hosted an extravagant party for her 55th birthday. Affleck reportedly did not attend. She was also spotted taking Affleck’s 12-year-old son, Samuel, on a shopping spree in Beverly Hills last week.
The couple surprised the world when they reunited in 2021, nearly two decades after they first got engaged. Though they were one of the biggest power couples ruling Hollywood in the early aughts, the pair famously called off their 2003 wedding just days before they were supposed to walk down the aisle.
“Ben and I broke up three days before our wedding, and we crumbled under the pressure. You think you’re doing okay, so you shrug it off,” Lopez said in her Amazon Prime documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told. “I think I was angry at [Affleck] for a long time. But that heartbreak set both of us on a course to figuring ourselves out, to being better people. I think I’ve forgiven you all they way. I think I need to forgive myself [for] some things.”
They both went on to start families with other spouses, with Jennifer Lopez marrying Marc Anthony in 2004 and Affleck marrying Jennifer Garner in 2005. Years after those relationships ended, Lopez and Affleck confirmed their romantic reunion by embarking on a couple’s holiday to Montana in May 2021. The following year, Affleck proposed to Lopez with a ginormous pale green diamond ring. They wed a few months following – first, in a secret chapel ceremony held in Las Vegas and, later, with a larger star-studded bash hosted at Affleck’s private Georgia estate.
“We’re older now, we’re smarter, we have more experience, we’re at different places in our lives, we have kids now, and we have to be very conscious of those things. We’re so protective because it is such a beautiful time for all of us,” Lopez told People in 2022. “It’s beautiful the way it feels very different than it was years ago. … There’s more of an appreciation and a celebration for it, which is nice. … When you find somebody and you really, really love them and you get a second chance at that? That is a really rare, precious, beautiful thing and we don’t take it for granted.”
