It’s official! Practical Magic will return to theaters. The Owens sisters’ supernatural epic will come back with a sequel scheduled for fall 2026. Nearly 30 years earlier, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock played two sisters, blessed with magical powers, who wish to ward off a curse that hangs over their family. When the film was released in 1998, the commercial failure was massive. Practical Magic failed to win over the public. Since then, this romantic comedy has become one of the cult classics of the genre.
It is undeniable today that the figure of the witch crosses time. In addition to entertaining the masses each Halloween, recent years are part of a more global context of (re)discovery of this somber and bewitching character.
The successive releases of many reboots confirm this trend of the witch’s return. Recall, for example, Hocus Pocus 2 and The Craft: The New Witches in 2020. Not to mention the make of Wicked, a repetition of the Wizard of Oz, released in December 2024. On the television series side, it was the cult Charmed and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina who came back to our screens a few years earlier.
Practical Magic 2 is therefore part of this horde of films that may be expected to return. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will officially reprise their roles as witches for this long-awaited sequel. In the first part, they slip into the shoes of the last heirs of a line of witches, all struck by a terrible spell. Every man, whose members of the clan fall in love, is doomed to die prematurely. While the first starts a family and the second meets a mysterious beloved, they must face this terrible destiny together.
According to Variety, it will be Susanne Bier who will be in charge of this sequel. As for the script, it will be Akiva Goldsman.
Practical Magic 2 is set to be released in theaters on September 18, 2026.
