Here Are Some Basic Rules To Showering

Similar to the field of hair washing, showering may raise concerns about methods and frequency. Brazilians are said to shower nearly twelve times per week, while Chinese, British and Japanese shower about five. The fact is that in summer showering causes even more doubts. That time of day – which may be repeated even several times for logistical reasons or simple heat – can be very pleasant but, if it is not executed correctly, it can cause certain inconveniences for the skin. Cosmetologist and formulator Aline Neumann, creator of the Método-R brand, uses the basic principles of chemistry to explain a fundamental rule of cleaning, especially in summer, when we cover our skin with sunscreens that are important to remove well.

“To properly remove the remains of water-resistant photoprotector, cleaning oils are especially effective. A basic principle of chemistry is that ‘equal dissolves the same’. Since the base of most sunscreens is oily, oil cleaners mix better with them and remove them completely with rinsing, provided they are well formulated. In fact, a recent study shows that only oil cleaners are able to remove 100% of water-resistant sunscreens. It’s called The optimal cleansing method for the removal of sunscreen: Water, cleanser or cleansing oil? and was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology,” she explains. Therefore, it seems that for both body cleansing in the shower and facial, an oil cleaner is the ideal option. And even more so if we consider that summer is not a great scenario for the skin. “Air conditioning, solar radiation, the sea and chlorine in swimming pools can compromise the skin barrier and promote dehydration,” adds Neumann. And without hydration there is no firmness or elasticity of the skin.

If you prefer a deeper cleaning when showering, Marta Barrero, pharmacist, expert in dermocosmetics and director of The Secret Lab center, recommends double cleaning: first with a cleansing oil and then with a soap-free gel.

Other rules of summer showering:

  • Showers should be brief, between five to 10 minutes.
  • The water should not be too hot since, according to Barrero, “excessive heat dilates the pores and removes the natural protective oils from the skin.”
  • When it comes to drying the skin, it should be done with small taps with the towel, and no rubbing.
  • When applying lotion, Aline Neumann confirms the myth: “Apply the moisturizer with the skin still slightly moist to seal the hydration. It’s an excellent trick to take advantage of the humidity of the shower as part of the moisturizing care.”
