Gingham Is The Print Of Summer

Gingham Is The Print Of Summer

Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz once ruled the gingham print. But now, in 2025, the print is seen everywhere this summer. While historically it may have given off a certain girlish charm, in recent years fashion fashion labels have put a more modern spin on the print. For example, for Loewe’s spring/summer 2025 men’s show, Jonathan Anderson sent out angular, thigh-grazing shirts in black and pale blue check. For autumn/winter 2025, Louis Vuitton opted for supersized checks fashioned into asymmetrical minidress and sculptural shirts.

Of course, there are many more wearable, daytime options available off the runway, as well. California label Dôen has seen gingham success this season, with its Ischia and Leslie midi-dress both using strategic smocking to create unique silhouettes. Younger designer brands, such as Frankies Bikinis have also delivered in this category, with the label collaborating with Bella Hadid on an edit of swimwear and ready-to-wear, which features a number of gingham dresses.

It’s also worth noting the number of Comme des Garçons gingham items available on the resale market – most notably from Red Kawakubo’s 1997 collection – which featured gingham dresses distorted by bulbous padding on the bust, rear and midriff, creating an avant-garde silhouette that challenged the conventions of traditional women’s clothing construction.

So, whether you’d prefer to dress more like Dorothy or be more like Red Kawakubo, there’s likely gingham styling for you this summer.
