How To Update Your Wardrobe This Autumn

September is a special month to update our wardrobe. This is the perfect time to take stock of our closets, whether they are the items that need added attention or those that are ready to switch owners. Below, experts share their best tips for updating your fall wardrobe.

Take note of what you already own

As we enter a new season, we take the opportunity to take note of what we have. We begin by putting summer clothes in the closet before doing an audit of the rest of the wardrobe. “It refreshes our memory of what we already have and how we can accessorize these pieces,” says Andrea Cheong, author of Why Don’t I Have Anything To Wear? “It also allows us to avoid buying something several times that we did not necessarily intend to afford.”

This is also an excellent time to examine the potential shortcomings of our wardrobes (and to figure out if they are really gaps or more fashion desires of the moment). “Take a picture of your outfit every time you leave home,” suggests Andrea Cheong. Once you have seven to ten looks, you will notice that you repeat a lot of silhouettes and styles. Are you happy with it? Do you still want to invest in a pair of sports sneakers of another color, or do you think a brown bag would go better with your outfits? We need to be realistic about what will really add value to our personal style, rather than following trends or buying more “basics” for fun.

Decide what to keep

When sorting through your clothes, consider the pieces you want to keep, the pieces that need to be repaired and the ones you might part with. Dani Coha, professional wardrobe organizer and founder of Wardrobe Fairy, advises to consider how often you have worn the item in question over the past few months. “If you have not worn it or little during this period, it may not be a basic item. If some of your clothes show significant signs of aging or damage that you are not ready to repair, consider parting with them.”

Separate responsibly

For the pieces you no longer wear, it is better not to hang out too long when it comes to finding them a new home, especially if you are hoping to resell them. The longer you keep them, the more they lose their value,” explains Antonia Johnstone, CEO of Sign of the Times. “Make sure everything is clean and in good used condition.”

If your items are irreparable, think about how you can still reuse them, especially if they are not easy to recycle. “They can be turned into cleaning cloths, reused to stuff cushions, etc.”

Repair your clothes

Before the new season, ensure all your fall clothes are in good condition. “Having your boots repaired at the beginning of the season is a good thing,” says Layla Sargent, founder and CEO of The Seam repair platform. If you have a lot of repairs to make, be sure to classify them in order of importance: “Start with the holes in your meshes, because they can quickly get worse if they are not treated,” continues the expert.

Your sweaters often need more general maintenance. “We always recommend hand washing at low temperature rather than dry cleaning,” says Buffy Reid, creative director and co-founder of &Daughter, who continues, “Use a fabric softener to remove creases on the surface if necessary.”

Organization is key

Once all your clothes are in good condition, storing them properly will not only keep them, but will also help you get dressed in the morning. “Organize your clothes by category, color and season,” suggests Coha. “If you don’t have the luxury of hanging everything in a large closet, there’s nothing wrong with storing out-of-season clothes under your bed or in the guest room.”
