‘Wednesday’ Has Arrived On Netflix

The Addams Family spinoff, Wednesday, has officially landed on Netflix today, November 23, and fans are so excited. The Guardian called it a “fantastic revamp of the Addams Family.” The series features eight episodes dedicated to Wednesday Addams’ adolescence directed by Tim Burton.

Known for her long black braids, stern attire and grim facial expressions, Wednesday is one of the most popular characters in Hollywood. Christina Ricci is most famously associated with the character from her 90s adaptation of The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values. Twenty-year-old Jenny Ortega had the feat of picking up the baton, who, according to critics, did an amazing job.

Ortega has starred in numerous TV series and films, such as Stuck in the Middle, Jane the Virgin, You, and Scream. “Wednesday is also technically Latin,” the actress said, “only she has never been represented like this.” Wednesday was born in 1938 by artist Charles Addams through comic strips. The Addams Family became booming in popularity due to its comedy TV series aired between 1964 and 1966 on the American network ABC. Since then, there have been musicals, cartoons, and four movies, two animated and two live-action. The two live-action films in 1991 and 1993 featured Christina Ricci as Wednesday, and the two animated films in 2019 and 2021 casted Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday.

In the new comedy series, Wednesday attends Nevermore Academy, a school for “weird” kids: there are vampires, werewolves, mermaids. Wednesday attempts to deal with her psychic abilities and being an outsider among outsiders. Meanwhile, she also tries to solve mysteries in Nevermore, which is lead by principal Larissa Weems (played by Gwendoline Christie). Her parents Morticia (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán) hope that their daughter will be able to settle into life among her peers, and leave Thing to help her.

The series was shot in Romania, in 70 locations combined with studio reconstructions, including the city of Jericho, where Wednesday’s school is located, built entirely for the show.
