3 Ways To Be More Mindful Of Your Technology Use

One of the greatest challenges we face living in the 21st century is all of the evolving technology. We must figure out how to use technology to our advantage, rather than becoming dependent on it, which many of us are. Being mindful of our technology habits is key to a happy and healthy life. We can do this with the help of these three tips on how to be more mindful of our technology use.

  1. A Mindful Moment

Whenever you are about to begin work at your computer or snag your phone or tablet, pause for a moment. Be still and bring your attention to present moment. Avoid rushing into stimulation of devices when you’re in “autopilot” mode. Try to start using your device in a state of mindful awareness. What are you searching for? What is your intention for browsing or posting? Are you representing your true self?

2. Wait Wisely

Whenever you’re on hold or waiting for a friend, an appointment, or something to load, rather than opening social media or beginning a different task, simply relax into the moment. Try to make your waiting time a mini-meditation session. You can do this by observing the flow of the natural breath. Take three deep breaths in through your nose and out through you mouth. By returning to the peace of the moment over the course of the day, you’ll find yourself happier, less stressed, and more productive.

3. Unplug with Awareness

It’s not a bad idea to have a digital detox occasionally. Plan some deliberate time in your life when you won’t be using any technology at all. This may be an hour a day or a couple of hours a week…whatever works for you. If you’re a heavy digital device user, this may cause some anxiety and a sense of disconnection or boredom once you’ve unplugged. This is a symptom of being overstimulated mentally. Don’t try to fight against the feeling, and resist the urge to reach for your nearest device. Do something else with your free time, like read a book, go for a walk, paint, journal, or cook a nice meal.

Being mindful of your technology use will help you throughout the day to stop “doing” and start “being”. With practice, you’ll begin to live more in a state of mindful awareness.
