Why We Should All Take Ourselves Out To Dinner

What’s sadder: going to a fabulous restaurant alone, or avoiding the restaurant you want to go to because you have nobody to go to dinner with?

Many people think eating alone is weird or sad. We’ve been taught this through film and television. So the thought of willingly putting ourselves in a scenario where someone could think we’re alone – not by choice – is scary. We’re afraid of being judged, of people thinking we’re lonely, of people wondering if we don’t have friends. We’re afraid of pity. But we shouldn’t be. Dining alone can be amazing experience, if you let it be. Here’s why you should love dining alone:

Pay closer attention to the world around you

Dining in a group may often divert your attention from the ambiance and experience of the restaurant, so by dining alone, you get to take in the details of the restaurant, the vibe, and the other diners and staff. This way, you can truly appreciate everything happening around you…as long as you stay off your phone.

Appreciate your food more

Rather than trying to make conversation with the person across from you, you get to aim your focus on the real reason you’re there – the food. You can take your time reading the menu with no pressure from anyone else and order exactly what you want. There’s no need to keep up with other diners around you or to get anywhere. You’re on your own schedule and can fully enjoy each bite.

Practice “me” time

We live in a nonstop state of sensory overload where we are expected to be busy, accessible, and productive…always. Dining alone allows you to not always be “on” or think of things to talk about. Instead, you can just reflect on your day, check in with yourself, and let your mind wander. It’s important we feel comfortable with ourselves and our own company.

Dining out doesn’t mean you’re lonely. It’s an opportunity to spend quality time with yourself. So go ahead and take your wonderful self out to dinner because you deserve it.
