A Guide To Returning Gifts Post Break-Up

Returning gifts after a break-up can be messy business. By the end of a relationship, sometimes, you may end up with an unusual array of things your significant other bought you. So when the relationship ends, you’re stuck wondering, what do you do with this pile of stuff? On one hand, they were gifts, and you probably love them, so you might be tempted to keep them. On the other hand, by returning the gifts, it allows you to close one chapter and move on. So here’s what you might do with gifts after you break up.

Keeping the gifts

Some of your most treasured – and frankly valuable – possessions may have come from your old significant others. Even if a relationship ends badly, presents that were given to you before the emotional warfare broke out feel safe to keep. These aren’t meant to be displayed on a mantlepiece, but as long as they hold no bad memories and strong value, they feel safe to keep.

Returning the gifts

The healthier, and more obvious, option is to return the gifts your ex has given you. Even if they don’t ask for the gifts back, there’s something to be said for getting rid of all of their stuff. Of course they may try saying, “It’s yours” or “I gave it to you, you should have it.” If that’s the case, find someone else who will take it. Sell it or give it to a friend. There’s probably bad/sad memories attached and you don’t need that in your life. And if you’re not one for confrontation, drop the items off with a mutual friend. The point is, to give back what they gave you and get rid of anything that may remind you of them and your life together. It will help you move on from the break-up, and that’s exactly what you need, even if you don’t hate them. It’s healthy for both of you.
