Prince Harry competed in the annual Sentebale Polo Cup this weekend, the flagship fundraiser for the charitable foundation the Duke of Sussex co-founded in 2006 to support children and young people in southern Africa affected by poverty, inequality, HIV/AIDS, and, more recently, COVID-19. The charity polo match has raised over $14 million for the organization to date, since it was first held in Barbados in 2010.
This year’s event was held at the Singapore Polo Club, where Prince Harry was joined on the field by friend and Sentebale ambassador Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras. The Argentinian polo star was made captain for the Singapore Polo Club Team, while Harry played for the Royal Salute Sentebal Team, which was captained by Malcom Borwick.
While both Harry and Figueras each scored magnificent goals for their teams, the match ended with a final score of 7-7 with honors shared. The match was followed by dinner at the InterContinental Singapore.
In a statement provided by Senetable, Harry highlighted the foundation’s established work to better the means of children and young people, while also honoring his late mother, Princess Diana. During a dinner following last year’s polo match in Aspen, the Duke marked the 25th anniversary of her death, saying that he is always inspired by her tireless work to support and destigmatize those experiencing HIV/AIDS.
“Sentebale has remained a pillar of support in communities across southern Africa for almost two decades, ensuring future generations are well equipped to address the many challenges facing our world,” Prince Harry said in a statement. “Adaptability and nimbleness have been a defining factor in our work since Prince Seeiso and I founded the charity 17 years ago.”
“Our work has remained rooted in our mission, and in honor of our late mothers, we wish to ensure all children and young people in souther Africa are empowered, healthy and able to pursure their ambitions and dreams,” he went on.
