Come Jan. 1, 2022, the world will get to celebrate the 20th anniversary of wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter with HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. It’s been 20 years since the first film’s release (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released in theaters on Nov. 16 2001). In honor of the franchise, HBO Max released a first look at the 20th anniversary special with a teaser and a cast list.
The first trailer didn’t present any footage from the cast reunion. In the teaser, there was a mashup of clips from the original releases. And the most important part was announced: the original trio cast members of the film will all be featured in the reunion special.
The new trailer that shows actual footage just arrived on Dec. 6. Clips show some of the actors of the franchise receiving Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry letters inviting them to appear on the special. You can also catch a glimpse of Platform 9 3/4, hinting the actors might return to the platform.
Along with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, many of the other Harry Potter cast stars will be featured in the reunion special. Expected to be on the special will be Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Ian Hart, Mark Williams, and Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, and Evanna Lynch. Chris Columbus, the director of the first two films, will also return.
The Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will tell a story of the creation of the film through all-new in-depth interviews and cast conversations. The special will come out on New Year’s Day 2022. HBO Max is calling it “a capstone event of the holiday season,” debuting it exclusively on HBO Max at 12:01 a.m. ET.
No need to worry if you don’t have HBO Max, though. WarnerMedia will make the special available on broadcast cable, meant to arrive on TBS and Cartoon Network sometime in Spring 2022. Possibly, this arrival will be in tune with the next film in the Wizarding World franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, set to release in April.
