The overall theme for autumn/winter 2023 is a sense of pragmatism with salute to conventional outfit formulas. This theme continued at autumn/winter couture shows, where Valentino opened with Kaia Gerber wearing white shirt and jeans instead of a billowing gown. This is still couture, of course, so the “effortless” silhouette of the oversized shirt was carefully crafted and the jeans were adorned with thousands of tiny glass beads. However, you don’t need to be a couture model with a budget for hand-sewn jeans to capture the mood for this styling.
Every so often there is a catwalk look that inspires thousands of copiers, and 2023 Kaia and her unbuttoned shirt and shoulder-grazing crystal earrings is the one. It is a traditional pairing that has slowly been gaining popularity within the street style circle. Actor and model Tina Kunakey has worn a white shirt and jeans to the Alaia show at the haute couture show in Paris for the previous two years.

This humble denim look has become the star denim look of 2023. Recently, Dua Lipa was spotted wearing a classic white shirt and jeans, but added a bit of edge with her Maison Margiela split-toe Tabi pumps and silver plate earrings. Sofia Richie (who wore this look back in September 2022) opted for a more upscale look, with Chanel pumps and a ladylike top-handle bag. Katie Holmes took things in a different direction. Her short-sleeved shirt and baggy logo-imprinted denim was more skater than Paris Fashion Week.

Despite Kaia’s viral fashion week moment, the most memorable white shirt and jeans still belong to the royal family. For her first official outing as the girlfriend of Prince Harry at the Invictus Games in 2017, Meghan Markle wore an oversized white shirt by her friend Misha Nonoo, tucked into a pair of skinny jeans by Mother Denim.

One of Princess Diana’s memorable off-duty outfits includes this classic pairing. On a three-day visit to Bosnia in 1997 to raise awareness about landmines, she wore a pressed white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, light-wash, high-waisted jeans, a pair of Tod’s camel leather loafers and gold hoop earrings.
